TOTO Eco Soiree MS964214CEF#51

The Eco Soiree is one of our favorite toilets. Not just in this color either. This is because it combines most of the things we look for. Performance, water efficiency, comfort, it's all there.

The bowl is elongated which gives better posture and support to your legs whilst seated. This means they are less likely to tire from being in an umcomfortable position. The bowl is also universal height, which adds a few extra inches on when compared to standard bowls.

Looking at the flushing mechanism provided, this is one of TOTO's double cyclone system, which uses two nozzles instead of the typical rim holes, producing a strong current of water through the bowl for an effective rinse. And because it uses just 1.28 Gallons per flush (4.8 litres), its able to meet the EPA WaterSense guidelines.

It's one piece, measures 28.1 x 17.8 x 27.8 inches and weighs 105 pounds.

We think this unit would work well as an upgrade or replacement for a residential home. It's low flow, saving you thousands of gallons each year, and is built with user comfort in mind.

KOHLER Cimarron K-3609-7

We've focused on the Cimarron collection several times before. We like the features and designs, and it's backed up by a brand with a solid reputation in this industry.

Like the Soiree, the K-3609 doesn't use a lot of water either. Its AquaPiston flush uses 1.28 gallons of water. Over the products lifetime, this can result in significant water and household utility bill savings.

Despite these savings, it still manages to achieve a excellent score on the MaP scale. The 1000grams given in the test is the highest given by Maximum Performance and demonstrates the strength of its flush.

It's comfort height, and has a reasonably compact, elongated shape bowl. It's two piece, and has a three inch flush valve.

Aesthetically, it's quite plain. This is a matter of opinion usually, but it loses some points for having a fairly basic design and the bowl isn't skirted around the sides.

Overall however, we think it holds its own against many of the competing brands. It's worth taking into consideration.

KOHLER Highline K-76301-7

The Highline range is another collection we've looked at in other guides. It has quite a simple, two piece exterior, with its trip lever on the side of the tank.

This is a low flowing model, capable of saving users up to 16,500 gallons every year. And because it meets EPA standards, you may be able to get a rebate. Check the WaterSense section of their website to find out if this applies to you.

It's taller than average, with a chair like seating height to make it easier on the joints when sitting and standing. The trapway is also concealed, which adds a few points to the overall look and feel in our view. It also makes cleaning the sides easier, with no cracks and bends for germs to hide in.

You'll find it fits a standard twelve inch rough in, and its dimensions are as follows: 29.8 x 18 x 31.2 inches.

Considerations before you buy

Alternative brands - While we've covered some of the bigger brands, you should also be researching into some of the smaller companies too. You may find some of their designs or features are better suited to your washroom. Check out our articles about Swiss Madison, Icera, and Gerber to see if they're a good fit for you.

Surface protection - Ever wondered what the smooth coating is which covers the ceramic china? This is known as glazing and it comes in many forms. Its main purpose is to help ensure waste doesn't stick to the bowl. But it is also used to stop bacteria from getting into the tiny pores in the china. This can help prevent odors too.

Seat - Is the seat included? If not, this will inflate the price a fair bit. Make sure you know what accessories and fixtures are coming with your sanitary ware if you want to avoid going over your set budget.

Consumer feedback - It's smart to check out what other buyers are saying about the products strengths and weaknesses before you buy. You may find many people were upset with their purchase due to it malfunctioning, or breaking within the first few months. Keep an eye on the complaint ratio. If their are too many, you would be wise to avoid it.

Wrapping up
